How A Car Fire Blanket Works?
A car fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish small fires in vehicles and prevent them from spreading. It consists of a fire-resistant material, typically fiberglass or a similar heat-resistant fabric, that is capable of smothering a fire by cutting off its oxygen supply.
Fire Detection
When a fire breaks out in the car, whether it's due to an engine malfunction or an electrical issue, it's crucial to identify the fire as quickly as possible. This can be done visually or by using a smoke or heat detector, which may be integrated into the vehicle's safety systems or included as part of the fire blanket itself.
Unfolding
Once the fire is detected, the car fire blanket should be easily accessible. It is usually stored in a compact, easily reachable location within the vehicle, such as under the driver's seat or in the trunk. To use the fire blanket, you need to remove it from its storage location and unfold it completely.
Smothering the Fire
Position the unfolded fire blanket between yourself and the fire, ensuring that you maintain a safe distance and protect yourself from the heat. Gently toss or place the blanket over the flames, covering the entire area of the fire.
Cutting off Oxygen Supply
The fire-resistant material of the blanket is designed to cut off the fire's oxygen supply, which is necessary for combustion. By blocking the access of oxygen to the fire, the blanket helps extinguish it or prevents it from growing further.
Heat Absorption

How to use a car Fire Blanket?
- A minimum of two people should deploy the fire blanket.
- Always use proper firefighting gear including a breathing apparatus.
- Roll out the fire blanket and center it before it is deployed.
- Make sure to use the side without seeing the sewing thread to cover the on-fire car, see the below photo, as in this way, the sewing thread can be better protected from facing the fire directly.
- Both persons should first grab each their handle, tighten the fire blanket and then safely pull it over the car in one continuous movement.
- Always center the fire blanket after covering the car.
- Make sure the fire blanket is tight all the way to the ground and that there are no openings to prevent air gaps, this should be finished very quickly.
